Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by unwanted, recurring thoughts (obsessions) that drive repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions can consume significant time each day and cause considerable distress, interfering with work, school, and personal relationships. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, harm, or losing control, while compulsions may manifest as excessive hand-washing, checking, counting, or seeking reassurance. OCD is often misunderstood, but it is a serious neurological condition that requires specialized and compassionate care.
Medication plays a vital role in OCD management. SSRIs are the first-line pharmacological treatment for OCD and are prescribed at higher doses than typically used for depression or anxiety. Clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, is also FDA-approved for OCD and may be used when SSRIs are not fully effective. These medications help reduce the intensity and frequency of obsessive thoughts, making it easier for patients to engage in evidence-based therapies such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). At Shore to Shore Psychiatry, we develop personalized OCD treatment plans that integrate medication management with therapeutic support to help patients regain control of their lives.
